Sean Couzyn

Director, Sutherland Engineers

Sean Couzyn has extensive experience in the design and delivery of a diverse range of building projects in a variety of roles from architect to tenant coordinator to structural and facade engineer.

Sean graduated from Wits in 1995. The early years of his career were grounded in architectural practice with experience gained primarily in commercial building design and retail design.

In July 2006 Sean joined Pure Consulting (Pty) Ltd to assist with the pursuit of 3D technology in the practice and to formalise architectural skill within the multi-disciplinary approach of the principals.

In his time at Pure Consulting, Sean fulfilled the roles of structural concept engineer and facade specialist on several high profile commercial and retail projects completed across Johannesburg.

In recent years, Sean has focused on his role in the practice as a building skin specialist, providing both upfront expertise as professional consultant, and specialist detail design work for facade contractors. Sean's specialist interest in facades extends to an in-depth understanding of the energy performance of facades. 

Recent facade work includes 30 Baker Street (Standard Bank Rosebank), 102 Rivonia Road (Ernst and Young/ Eris), Katherine and West (Barrow Projects), Sandton City Overclad projects - Atrium on 5th and Tower (Liberty Life), Department of Environmental Affairs (Pretoria), Sasol Corporate Head Office (Alchemy) 90 Rivonia Road (Webber Wentzel), Alice Lane Precinct Phase C (Bowman Gilfillan), Discovery Health (Zenprop / Growthpoint), 140 West Road (Zenprop).

Sean was a shareholder and partner of Pure Consulting since March 2008 to his departure in April 2015, heading up the Facade Group for the last few years.

Sean has taken the opportunity presented by his South African restraint of trade, to take the position of Director of the Nairobi based Sutherland Engineers, bringing structural and facade engineering expertise to the East African region.
